Funds for Chinese: BN fulfils pledge, hands over RM to Rasa school

2010/04/29

PUTRAJAYA: Barisan Nasional will not punish the Chinese community for their lack of support in the recent Hulu Selangor parliamentary by-election but is hoping that they will back the ruling party in future.
Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak gave an assurance that no community in the country would be sidelined.

He also made good yesterday the promise he made during the by-election to SJK (C) Rasa by handling over RM3 million for the refurbishment of the school, including its expansion.

The allocation was approved on Monday, the day after BN candidate P. Kamalanathan wrested the opposition seat with a 1,725 vote majority.

Najib said he wanted it on record that BN would fulfil its promises.

The people must know that it is a party they could rely on and trust to meet their expectations and aspirations, he said.
“I must refute suggestions that BN will sideline the Chinese community as they did not give us their full support in the by-election.

"Today, we prove that we do not do that.

“This contribution is one done out of sincerity to the Chinese community and we hope to get cooperation from them. Even though they did not support us fully then, we hope that in the futurethey will give us more support,” Najid said after presenting a cheque for the allocation to the chairman of the school board, Ng Tek Kui.

In the Sunday by-election, BN obtained 28 per cent of the Chinese vote, down from the 37 per cent in the 2008 general election.

Also present were Hulu Selangor newly-minted member of parliament P. Kamalanathan and MCA leaders.

"We are handing the allocation over directly to the school’s management so that they can start constructing additional buildings in the school.

“My debt (to the school) is settled,” Najib said in jest.

He made the promise to help the 80-year-old school, located in the heart of Rasa town, on Saturday.

Although the school, with a student population of 330, was not on the list of Chinese schools to receive a government allocation under the second economic stimulus package, Najib said he could not ignore the community’s appeal for a new building.

Selangor Umno deputy liaison chief Datuk Seri Noh Omar, who was at the presentation, said the BN would have its ear to the ground to listen to the grouses of the people and resolve them.
"We don’t just sweet talk but take action to address people’s problems.”

Noh said BN would analyse and solve the issues behind the lack of solid support from the Chinese community to BN.

“Feedback from the ground was that the Chinese want certain issues to be addressed but they are very keen on the 1Malaysia concept.”

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek chided the opposition for accusing the government of giving allocations as a bargaining chip for garnering support.

“Allocations for development are justified and BN is not in the business of punishing those who turn the other way as development is the duty of the government in power.”
