Matter of survival for Bumiputra entrepreneurs

2010/05/10

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Resolutions from a Malay economic convention, which ended yesterday, would be presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as input for the New Economic Model (NEM).
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said resolutions from the two-day convention were reflections on the issues concerning the Malays' economic survival.

He said the resolutions demanded an immediate attention and reaction from Umno and the government to create a holistic business ecosystem for Malay entrepreneurs.

"The resolutions will also be tabled at the next Umno Supreme Council meeting so that we could better understand the pulse of the rakyat on the ground," he said after closing the convention organised by the state Umno liaison committee.

Zahid, who is also the Penang Umno chief, said they would also propose that all federal agencies set up to look after the interest of the Bumiputeras in Penang be placed under the state Umno liaison committee, via a newly formed Penang Bumiputera Asset Foundation (YABPP).

Among the agencies involved in looking after the welfare of the Bumiputera are Yayasan Bumiputera Pulau Pinang, Jawatankuasa Pemandu Bumiputera Pulau Pinang Sdn Bhd (JKP) and the Yayasan Pembangunan Bumiputera Pulau Pinang.
He said YABPP would not take over the management of existing foundations but work towards streamlining their operations and avoiding an overlapping of duties.

Among the foundations' roles are to look into ways to improving the property ownership rate among Malays in the state, which has fallen drastically in recent years.

"We will find solutions to build more affordable housing and business premises for Malays in Penang and realising the potential of existing lands to spur economic activities."

Zahid said the state Umno would also set up an ad hoc committee to assume an advisory role over issues concerning the Malays in Penang.

More than 400 participants from all Umno divisions in the state took part in the convention.
