PUBLIC DEBATE NOT FOR QUARRELLING - KHAIRY

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- Umno Youth vice-chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today the public debate he proposed to those who had qualified to contest for the movement's chief post was to provide an avenue for them to explain their vision.

Stressing that the debate was not for quarrelling, Khairy, the second candidate to have qualified to contest the movement's chief post, said that on the contrary, it would be conducted in a responsible and orderly manner.

"The debate will be gentlemanly conducted... just tell me the place, time and date and I'll be there," he told reporters at the MIC Deepavali do at the Putra World Trade Centre, here.

He thanked former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, the third candidate to have qualified to contest for the post, for agreeing to the debate.

Khairy, however, declined to comment on the refusal of another candidate, Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, to be drawn into the debate.

When asked of his chances at the party polls, Khairy said he believed his chances remain bright.

"The chances are okay... let's see what happen. I look forward to campaigning hard," he said.

Salam..

The topics chosen to debate is too rhetoric. At the end of the day all will be well said and less done.

Why don't they debate on Money Politics? The best issue that has tarnished UMNO ever since.

Would Khairy even consider this?

To me it is not rhetoric to talk about their vision, perjuangan and discuss certion hot issues of the because one of them become the new ketua pemuda. Mukhriz's slogan is 'Berani Berubah'. What does he means by 'berani' when he is outrightly against a debate. Is he afraid? What is he afraid of when all all this he does show any fear to speak openly against the party and government leadership and helped to undermine them along the way.

Politics is about perception. He is a hero up to now. But by no agreeing to the debate and giving flimsy excuses Mukhriz is in danger of losing his credibility.

I am sure many of the UMNO Youth Divisions which have nominated him will be wondering why?

I am not supporting any candidate, but I like the idea of having a debate. It can touch on the vision of each candidate, the nature of money politics and its eradication, reformation of judiciary, police, separation of power, erosion of Malay rights etc etc . All these are issues of interest to the young generation which need to be attracted back to UMNO.

Salam to Mantra,

In the first paragraph of my response my points are not clear due to typing errors. Thus I need to reiterate and clarify.

What I mean basically is that the three candidates need to make their stand clear on their vision, struggle and also their take on certain issues of the day because one of them will be the new Ketua Pemuda, an important post in the party.

The second point is that Mukhriz has not shown any fear to speak up against the leadership sometimes making himself expose to disciplinary action. So why is he now unwilling to an open debate?

There are no changes as to the rest of the paragraphs.

Thank you.
