KHAIRY TO CONTEST IN REMBAU

“If I did not get the rezeki (blessing) for Rembau, I did not want to contest,” he said, after the list was announced. “This is a challenge for me. I promise to be a good candidate and hopefully a good wakil rakyat if chosen by the voters.”
Khairy is married to Nori, the only daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. When asked if being the Prime Minister’s son-in-law would burden his contest for the seat, Khairy said it was part of his identity and he could not run away from it.

Khairy to contest in Rembau

SEREMBAN: Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin was yesterday named as the candidate for the Rembau parliamentary constituency.

The 32-year-old Rembau Umno Youth division head was among the 18 new faces introduced by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan before a packed crowd at the latter’s official residence here.

In the race: Mohamad (centre) and the candidates he introduced before a big crowd at his official residence in Seremban.

“I would like to express my gratitude to those who were dropped. We brought in new faces as we felt they would be able to serve effectively and had better chances of winning,” he said.

In the last election, Barisan’s Datuk Firdaus Muhammad Rom Harun won the Rembau seat with an 18,656 majority, polling 28,664 votes.

“Khairy was selected because he is the national Umno Youth deputy head. We felt the state would benefit if he contested because he has good academic credentials and exposure,” Mohamad said.

The state has eight parliamentary and 36 state seats. In the last elections, Barisan won all but the Bahau and Lobak state seats. However, Bahau assemblyman Lim Fui Ming joined the MCA last March.

Khairy said Rembau was the only constituency he wanted to contest in, and he had conveyed this to Mohamad.

On whether he was expecting a tough fight, he said he had been a prime target of the Opposition for a long time.

“I have to be prepared for anything,” he said.
